Many people scream and whine about genetically modified organisms, however I think that is silly. For fairness I have worked in field.
They put one gene in cotton to get it to produce an organic pesticide (replacing millions of tons of dangerous chemicals), or a gene into corn that keeps it from being harmed by a common herbicide. Then weave it into cloth (after a bleaching process that ensures no protein is retained) or feed it to animals, and people have a cow. However, when you go to the store and buy a hybrid of cauliflower and broccoli, fruit hybrid like a plumot or tangelo and no one says a thing, cause it is "natural". These are double standards that make little sense. Who cares if the cow you are eating is cloned, once it’s cooked medium well, its parentage is of little concern. Some of the biggest transgenics experiments are going on in your large intestine right now. The bacteria that live there pick up bits and pieces of DNA from their surroundings and incorporate that into their genome, just to see if it might be useful. So if the bacteria in your gut are performing illegal research in cross species transgenics, why haven’t we been wiped out? Because most of it is harmless, the bacteria die for their mistake, and life goes on since there was 500 billion bacteria just like them living in you. As for the possibility that these transgenic genes will cause mass allergic reactions which will kill people like nerve gas, um well then it should have already happened. Bt is sprayed on organic fruits and vegetables, and the Roundup ready gene is an amplification of one of the plant’s natural genes. It is just better press to scream the sky is falling, than talk about the 2 billion people will have food and clothes, instead of starving like they would if we grew all crops organically.
