Since this has been a tragically weak movie year. I thought I would say some nice things about two movies that deserve praise: Lord of War and Serenity.
Lord of War is a guy film, girls will like too. Despite it's subject matter it neither glorifies violence nor becomes too peachy. Sure it is a weird kind of morality tale but it is still an excellent film. While the trailers can usually spoil a movie Lord of War was so much more than I excpeted.
Serenity is the movie adaptation of the short lived show Firefly and is actually pretty good. While you don't have to have seen all 20 episodes of Firefly (cause I haven't), it does help if you have seen a few. Okay, Serenity will not be winning any Academy Awards, but of all the SciFi movies to come out so far this year, it was tops. It is just campy enough to see it's Buffy the Vampire Slayer roots, but not so cheesy you groan.
