For the past several days my very smooth 1.5 Mbs internet connection has been 6Kbs, which is slower than most fax machines, when it worked at all. Needless to say I have been abit put off. At first I thought it was my fault, that I was transferring too much data and that was slowing me down. So, I stopped all network traffic except http and pop3 no luck, then I tried every cleaver trick I could think of to fiddle with my network and DSL modem, with intermittent success. Finally I broke down and called tech support, the women who was clearly in India (I love hearing Indian’s speak, since they speak excellent English (if slightly accented) but the English they speak is learned from a book, since they use words that are technically correct, but just not quite right because of how formal they are, and no I can’t think of an example right now, but let’s just say some one with that strong of a vocabulary should be able to understand idiomatic English too.) She was no help but since by the time I got to talk to her the connection was fine. I swear it is a conspiracy something can be broken beyond repair but as soon as the repair person touches it, it works totally fine and you look like a moron.
By this morning the connection was totally shot, 10 minutes to open Yahoo.com. To cut an already long story short they blamed my computer as being broken, I explained the innumerable reasons that was not the most likely scenario and was forwarded along to an other level of tech support who again blamed me until she read the note that it was a area wide problem, and quickly changed tacks. Do I feel better yes and no. Yes because will get fixed no because it might take days, and so until then I come to you live at 26.4K dial up. I don’t understand how anyone can live with a connection that crawls like this. So, if you only have dial up you have my sympathy.
